More Concept Art

Adede's face, because I guess that's needed?

This was Gibb. At one point he had 3 fingers, for a captain hookish feel?

So many satchels. These are all of Medo's in 3, including her dust pouch. Again, needed?

Rallyn's creepy friends.

This was a sketch of Malva and some of the Witchfolk pendents.

Bogo, because you all wanted to see him, right? Right?

Ohlos Crullak concepts.

Migwul Concept Art

Map of the Torn Realms

Beshrewed Recap

Since it’s been two years between books, I feel the need to recap audience members in a similar way that TV shows recap previous episodes. So here’s what you need to know about Beshrewed in order to enjoy book 2:
A Basic Beshrewed Recap:
  • Medo Tatterwing found a book of Black Magic clutched in the arms of a dead woman. Her people were not fans of this, and exiled her for finding it.
  • In her post-exile travels, Medo ran into a mysterious hermit/Seer named Rallyn who introduced us to Medo’s companions.
    • Marlin, a greedy magician
    • Owyn, a rag clad boy who was in trouble with the law.
  • Owyn had made a deal with Rallyn. A treasure hunt of sorts, where Rallyn provided some strange bug-like guides who would show Owyn the way to lost treasure.
    • Owyn was personally hoping to find a blade in order to sort out his law-troubles.
    • Rallyn wanted a shield that could ward off magic. But he was too lazy to go himself. Thus his deal with Owyn.
  • After joining up with these two pals, Medo emerges from the swamp to find a dragon named Migwul is hunting her. This is bad news, because the dragon has servants (the Named) who totally hate Black Magic users. Once they catch wind of Medo, they seek to destroy her book and kill/capture her.
  • Our heroes seek refuge in the mountains and find out there is hardly any treasure. So Rallyn starts to look bad, because, as a self proclaimed Seer, he should have known how accessible the treasure was. In the end, Owyn is able to obtain Rallyn’s shield, but only at great personal effort.
  • Later we find out that Rallyn didn’t only send them on a fruitless hunt, but he was also the one who tipped Migwul off about Medo. That basically he engineered this whole conflict between our heroes and Migwul. That he put them into danger on purpose because… he’s a jerk?
  • The conflict resolves in the end, because Medo is able to kill the dragon with Black Magic from her book. Like a bad ass.
So that’s the main story. But here’s some political details of note:
  • Migwul was not just a dragon. She’d once been Queen Rowan, wife to King Tresdayle – rulers over the Torn Realms.
  • The legend went that Rowan was changed to dragon-form by an old man named Morogwym (an old enemy of hers and the king’s, returned from banishment).
  • When the King found out what had happened to Rowan, he rushed out to get vengeance on Morogwym, and to uncover a cure for the spell. He never came back from this chase. But he left his Huntsmen behind to keep the dragon-Queen safe. Ten years passed after this, and the dragon, now known as Migwul, got increasingly out of hand and destructive. Everyone pretty much knew she had to die by the time Medo got around to doing it.
So anyway, the aftermath:
  • Without Migwul’s protection, her servants (the Named) were rendered powerless. So the use of Black Magic was no longer punishable by death. A good thing for Medo.
  • The surviving Huntsmen grudgingly realized the error in their ways and their order disbanded.
  • The realms were left to rule themselves locally, while Rowan and Tresdayle’s ruined Castle, Tornhold, was abandoned. Medo chose the ruined keep as her new home, settling into it with her companions.
  • Of Rallyn the hermit, there was no more direct contact. Near the end of the story, Medo catches one of his bugs skulking around Tornhold after the dust had settled. She tells the bug that they know about Rallyn betraying them. She also warns it that Rallyn had better stay out of their lives and that he’s not getting the shield Owyn took from the mountains
Terms & Names from Beshrewed that might also come up:
  • Ohlos Crullak: The name of the ruins in the mountains where Rallyn sent Owyn for treasure. Incidentally, there was little treasure to be had. It was a graveyard overrun by the worst of Migwul’s Named.
  • Larkin Bag: This bag Medo found in Ohlos Crullak. It has an impenetrable hide and can’t be opened except by the person who last closed it. Before Medo got it, the satchel was an heirloom of the Larkin House (a dead line, famous for dark magic practice)
  • The Lyns: The misunderstood cave dwelling creatures that Medo allied herself with. They were a cursed people, their skin peeling under any contact from sunlight. They were enemies of Rowan and Tresdayle and friends to the Larkin House.
  • Cob: An old guy who stood up against the Huntsmen and helped Medo to end Migwul’s reign. He’s the one who ensured Medo could live in the ruins of Tornhold.
